Antonio Loprieno is President of the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities – ALLEA, an association of more than 50 academies in over 40 countries, and of Jacobs University Bremen. He chairs the Austrian Science Board.

Loprieno studied Egyptology, Linguistics and Semitic Studies at the University of Turin in Italy and taught at various European universities, including the University of Göttingen, Germany, and the University of Perugia in Italy. He was also a professor of Egyptology in the United States at the renowned University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and later served as a professor at the University of Basel, where he was Rector from 2006 to 2015.

From 2008 to 2015, Antonio Loprieno was President of the Swiss Rectors’ Conference, and 2018-2019 President of the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of numerous academies and learned societies, including the Academies of Sciences of Turin and Göttingen, as well as Academia Europaea
