Hans-Gert Pöttering was a member of the European Parliament from 1979 until 2014, the only member of the European Parliament to have served continuously since the first elections. From 1999-2007 he was Chairman of the European People’s Party-European Democrats. He was thePresident of the European Parliament from January 2007 to July 2009. As President of the European Parliament, he initiated the House of European History project. For many years he is serving as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the House of European History in Brussels. On 4 December 2009 Pöttering was elected Chairman of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation from1 January 2010; he was succeeded by Norbert Lammert in 2018. Since then, he is the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Representative for European Affairs. He is currently Chairman of the Former Members Association (FMA) of the European Parliament. He is a member of the Reconciliation of European Histories Group.
