He was a frontal activist in the struggle against the communist regime in former Czechoslovakia, founder of the Social-democratic movement in Slovakia (1989). He has been member of the National Parliament and chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee (2002-2009) and a Vice-chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe 2006-9). He represented Slovakia in the Convention for the Constitution of Europe under the chairmanship of Valéry Giscard d’Estaing (2002-2003), then a Member of the European Parliament (2009-2019). Boris Zala had been Head of the Department of the Politology and European studies at UCF University and is an author of many philosophical and historical books. He is a regular correspondent to the main Slovak newspapers and has been for a long time one of the leading intellectual in Slovakia.
